An exceptional female-farmed coffee from Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Roast level: 3/5

Product details

Maria Mateo, a second-generation coffee farmer in a Popti Mayan community, inherited her coffee farm 15 years ago. She emphasizes environmental care and coffee quality control as keys to her success. Maria has honed her skills through training with the El Sendero cooperative, which offers support and information to coffee producers in Concepcion Huista.

El Sendero, established in 2016, has 196 members, with 62 women and 134 men. The cooperative prioritizes gender equality and provides special support to young coffee producers in the region.

This is a washed coffee, which is a common processing method in Guatemala. Maria and her children work together diligently to process their coffee for maximum quality. Shortly after picking, the coffee is de-pulped and then fermented with a small amount of water for 24-32 hours depending on the weather. Next, they wash off the mucilage. The parchment coffee is sun-dried for 6 days and turned every 40 minutes for even drying. Finally, the coffee is stored in sacks until delivery to a warehouse in San Antonio Huista.

Maria produces 20 bags of coffee on average annually and we are pleased to have got 6 bags from her this time to offer you this amazing micro-lot coffee. Mokkamestarit has been an advocate for female-farmed coffee over the years.

“My years working in the field and the farm have shown the importance of working in a culturally sensitive way and a way that cares for the environment. The work we do in the wet mill helps the family assure good quality coffee.” - Maria Mateo.

This coffee is pleasant and complex with multiple layers of flavors from nutty to floral and fruity with hints of apple and forest fruits, which end with a sweet and lingering aftertaste.

An important part of Mokkamestarit's coffee range is female farmed coffee. Women are often in the weakest position in coffee production and do the heaviest work in submissive conditions. By purchasing their products, we can support women's empowerment for a more valuable life, and it is well-known that women share the revenue they make with coffee for the development of their entire community, such as education and health.
